Gift cards
Sell gift cards on your storefront, manage issued codes, and see how they appear on orders
Gift cards let customers pay with stored value on your storefront. You can issue cards manually in the vendor app, or sell gift-card products so customers buy a card at checkout and receive the code by email. Gift cards are not the same as promo codes—they hold a balance that can be used across one or more orders until it runs out.
Open gift cards
- Select your location from Locations.
- In the sidebar, open Settings.
- Open the Gift Cards tab.
You will see:
- Selling Gift Cards — master switches for selling gift cards on the storefront
- Gift Card Amounts — the amounts customers can buy (for example $25, $50, $100), each with an Active toggle
- Issued Gift Cards — a list with Name, Code, and Balance (remaining / original amount), plus an Active toggle
Selling gift cards
Use this when customers should buy a gift card on your storefront (instead of you creating the code yourself).
Turn selling on
- Open Settings → Gift Cards.
- Under Selling Gift Cards, turn on Sell gift cards. Show on food menus switches on with it, so gift cards appear as a Gift Cards section on every storefront menu without you placing them by hand. Turn it off if you only want to sell them on their own.
- Click Save.
When Sell gift cards is off, gift cards are hidden from the storefront even if they are still on a menu.
Under the toggles, Sell gift cards on their own tells you whether customers can buy a card without ordering food. It reads Not set up until you click Set up standalone shop (or create a Digital menu yourself in Menus). You need at least one active amount before the button is available — see Sell gift cards on their own.
Add the amounts you sell
- Open Settings → Gift Cards and find Gift Card Amounts.
- Click Add Amount, enter the value (for example
50), and save. Repeat for each amount you want to offer. - Optionally click Allow Custom Amount and set a Minimum amount and Maximum amount so customers can choose their own value at checkout.
Each amount is created for you as a tax-free gift-card product—you do not need to visit Products. Inventory does not apply.
To stop offering an amount, use its Active toggle. To take it off the list entirely, use the delete action. Neither affects cards you have already sold: those keep their balance and stay redeemable.
Gift-card amounts appear in Products as read-only rows with an Edit in Gift Cards link, so the two screens cannot disagree about what is on sale.
Sell gift cards on their own
Use this when customers should buy a gift card without ordering food (no pickup or delivery time).
- Add at least one active amount under Gift Card Amounts.
- Under Selling Gift Cards, find Sell gift cards on their own.
- Click Set up standalone shop and confirm.
Pavement creates a Gift Cards menu on your storefront (Digital fulfillment, no scheduling), adds your current amounts to it, and turns on Show on front so customers can reach it. The status changes from Not set up to the menu name.
You can rename or change that menu anytime under Menus — use Edit in Menus on the Gift Cards page to get there.
After the standalone shop is set up, new amounts are added to that Digital menu automatically. Turning an amount off or deleting it removes it from that menu only — other items on the menu stay as they are. Show on food menus still controls whether amounts appear on food orders.
Put gift cards on a menu (optional)
You can also sell gift cards in two ways without using the one-click setup:
| Placement | When to use |
|---|---|
| On a regular (food) menu | Customer can buy a gift card together with food on the same order. With Show on food menus on, this happens automatically. |
| On a Digital menu | Standalone gift-card purchase with no pickup/delivery date or time — same as Set up standalone shop, but you build the menu yourself. |
To create a Digital menu manually:
- Open Menus → New Menu.
- Under Fulfillment Mode, choose Digital (no scheduling).
- Save, then add your gift-card amounts to a section on that menu.
Digital menus skip Available Hours, Fees, and Order Timing in menu settings—customers go straight to adding items and checkout.
If the standalone menu is hidden from your storefront, Sell gift cards on their own warns you—turn on Show on front for that menu so customers can reach it.
What the purchaser receives
After a paid gift-card purchase:
- The order funds a new gift card (unique code, face amount from the line).
- Pavement emails the purchaser a separate gift-card message (in addition to the order receipt) with:
- Location name
- To / From / Message (captured when adding the gift-card product; same values apply if quantity is greater than 1)
- Code(s) and amount(s)
- A link to buy / order on that location’s storefront
The purchaser can forward the code to the recipient. Redeeming still works only on the location that sold the card.
Customers cannot apply an existing gift card or promo code when buying a gift-card product.
Create a gift card (manual issue)
Use this when you want to create a code yourself (for example, for a walk-in or phone order).
- On Settings → Gift Cards, click Add (or the equivalent create button).
- Fill in:
- Name — a label for your team (for example, the customer’s name or “Holiday 2026”).
- Dollar Amount — the starting balance on the card.
- Active — leave on so customers can redeem it.
- Save.
Pavement generates a unique code automatically. After save, the code appears in the list (and when you edit the card). Share that code with the customer.
Codes are unique across Pavement. In the current release, a card is valid at the location where it was created. Customers must check out on that location’s storefront to use it.
Edit or disable a gift card
- Open Settings → Gift Cards.
- Click the card (or its actions menu) to edit.
- Update Name or Active as needed, then save.
Turn Active off to stop new redemptions. The remaining balance is unchanged until you enable the card again.
Use delete only if the card should be removed entirely (for example, created by mistake). Prefer disabling if the card may still need a record.
How customers use a gift card
On your storefront:
- The customer builds a cart and opens Order Summary.
- They enter the gift card code and click Apply (they can apply more than one card if needed).
- The order total still shows the full amount; gift card credit reduces what they pay by card or cash.
- At checkout they complete payment for any remaining amount (or pay fully with gift card if the balance covers the order).
If a gift card has no remaining balance, is inactive, or was created for a different location, the storefront will reject the code.
Seeing gift cards on an order
When a customer paid partly or fully with a gift card:
- Open the order from Orders.
- On the order Total row, expand the accordion (if shown).
- You will see lines such as:
- Paid by Gift Card (••••XXXX) — amount taken from the card
- Paid by [payment method] — amount charged to card, cash, or test payment
The PDF receipt download uses the same breakdown.
Gift card codes on receipts are masked (last characters only) for privacy.
Balance tips
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Card worth more than the order | Only the order total is taken; leftover balance stays on the card. |
| Order costs more than the card | Gift card covers part; customer pays the rest with their selected payment method. |
| Multiple gift cards | Allowed—balances apply one after another. |
| Order refunded | Gift card value used on that order can be restored to the card (when refunds are processed in the system). |
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Customer says the code does not work | Confirm the card is Active, has remaining Balance, and was created for this location. Codes are case-insensitive but must match exactly. |
| Balance looks wrong after an order | Open the order and check the Paid by Gift Card amount under Total. Refresh the Gift Cards list. |
| Card was used but order still shows full card charge | Expand Total on the order—gift card and card/cash amounts should both appear when it was a split payment. |
| Need a specific code for a customer | Create a new card and share the generated code. Custom bulk import is handled by Pavement ops if you were given an import template. |
| An amount does not show on the storefront | Confirm Sell gift cards is on under Settings → Gift Cards, the amount's Active toggle is on, and either the amount is on a menu or Show on food menus is on. |
| Customer cannot pick a date/time for a gift-card-only order | Use Set up standalone shop on the Gift Cards page, or add amounts to a Digital menu under Menus (no scheduling). |
